These Vegan Chinese Bakery Style Hot Dog Buns are light and fluffy. They require minimal ingredients to make and are perfect for breakfast if you want something savory or for lunch.
One of the bakers hands my mom a tray as I browsed the shelf of freshly baked bread.
The smell of buttery bread fills the entire bakery. My mom walks ahead of me knowing what she will grab- the usual pineapple buns, sponge cakes, and egg tarts. I usually don’t get anything else, but occasionally when I am too hungry and want something different to eat on our way home, I will grab some of the Chinese Hot Dog Buns, carefully placing it on my mom’s tray not wanting to smush any of the bread, a pet peeve of mine.

When we return back to our car, I’ll grab one of the buns, asking if my mom or dad wants one, but they almost always say no, saying they want to eat a full meal when they get home instead.
I will bite into one, immediately delighted by the softness and fluffiness of the bread combined with the saltiness of the hot dog. I look up and stare into the rear mirror from the front seat watching my mom hold onto the box of pastries and buns nodding off. In my mind, I wonder how tired she was and if she didn’t want to eat any of them because she wants to save them for my siblings, dad, and me instead.
My family is not big on showing affection, but it is moments like these, the smaller actions that I know how much my mom and dad cared for my siblings and I. Sometimes it is the actions that speak louder than words alone.
What is one thing that someone has done for you that you did not ask them to do that meant a lot to you?
